Ms P. Thomas has painted objects associated with Gija burial rituals. " After somebody pass away, the old people wouldn't eat beef for one month or long time and just have fish and witchetty grub- lakranel. And they would make a chain out of hair- Dungul in Gija, and rub it with larkanal and kuntarril (fish) and wear it around the neck to remind them of the one passed away". Phyllis says this was also a sign to other people not to cook meat nearby- "they have to go long way." It was also part of Gija ritual to place the body of the dead in ant pits, or termite mounds. This painting shows ceremonies surrounding death.
