.... Les Aborigènes du Spinifex (Ilkurlka) ont vécu sur leurs terres traditionnelles depuis des milliers d'années avant de rencontre l'occident vers les années 1950. A ce moment là ils devront quitter leurs terres à cause des essais nucléaires britanniques autour de Maralinga.
Comme dans d'autres communautés Aborigènes, la séparation avec leurs territoires fut vécu comme un véritable exode et une profonde rupture pour leurs communautés. La revendication de leurs terres par la suite, leur succès dans ce processus, puis l'opportunité de retourner vivre sur place, a touché à de multiples dimensions aussi bien politiques, culturelles qu’émotionnelles. Cette diaspora, puis la reconnexion à leur terre, à leurs lieux sacrés millénaires, donne une intensité toute particulière à leurs peintures, restaurant le lien essentiel avec leurs mythes du Temps du Rêve et leurs ancêtres.
.. Between the 50s and 60s, the Aboriginal people of Spinifex (Great Victoria Desert) temporarily moved away from their traditional territories due to British nuclear testing at Maralinga.
As in other Aboriginal art communities, the separation with the traditional land was like an exodus and a strong breakthrough.
The revendication to retrieve their territories, the fact they succeed, then the opportunity to go back there, were embracing a large spectrum from politics to also an emotional process. This emotion was reinforced by this period of separation.
This diaspora, then the reconnection to their land and their native & spiritual places, gave such a hight intensity to their paintings, re-establishing the connectivity with their significant places, stories and their ancestors being there. ....

En 1997, le Spinifex Arts Project sera lancé sur leur territoire à Tjuntjunjara et fera partie du processus de récupération de leurs terres auprès des tribunaux fédéraux dans le cadre du Native Act Title.

Leurs œuvres vibrantes, et rares font partie des collections des plus grandes institutions dont le British Museum.

Œuvre magistrale du Spinifex Art Project. Format : 290 x 200 cm. Titre : Minyma Tjuta. Collaborative paintings are signature pieces for the Spinifex Artist. In this work four senior women, Myrtle Pennintgton, Estelle Hogan, Tjaruwa Woods and Kanta Donnnegan have collaborated to paint the Minyma Tjuta (Seven Sisters) Tjukurpa incorporating a younger emerging artist, Lois Pennington as a way of handing down skill and knowledge. This painting depicts the songline of the Seven Sisters also known locally in Pitjantjatjara as Kungkarangkalpa or Minyma Tjuta. This is a very important Tjukurpa especially for women as it holds much secret women's business amoungst the general narrative...
