Japarra the moon man is central to the Tiwi Creation Story. Purukapali's younger brother ran away with his wifwe Bima, her baby Jinani left alone to die from heat and neglect, a bitter struggle ensued between the brothers and the king proclaimed all life would be subject to mortality. Japarra escaped up into the moon where his body changed into a pale half moon.
